Once again its time to celebrate except this year we will be doing things a bit different. The Greater Toledo Urban League is commemorating our 13th year with our regular annual dinner. This year is different however because at the same time we are recognizing our National affiliate with a very special “Centennial Celebration”. this March 12th event will be held at the Park Plaza as it was last year and feature a more celebratory feel than the norm. To help individuals and families move toward financial stability by helping them increase their income, ask build savings, and gain/sustain assets.

United Way of Greater Toledo’s recently launched Agenda for Change focuses on education, income, and health. Specifically, the area of income focuses on helping families become financially stable through financial education, asset development, and credit repair/debt reduction. United Way identified several organizations in the community already doing this work and brought them together to create the Financial Stability Collaborative.

The Collaborative brings the fragmented resources and educational opportunities together to avoid duplication of services and create a solid process for financial education.

It is important to understand this work addresses multiple faces of poverty.

The Collaborative has identified three populations:

1. Transitional: This population has housing stabilization barriers. External factors may include substance abuse, domestic violence, and multiple encounters with the court system.
2. Situational: Most in this category have recently encountered job loss and are unfamiliar with available resources. This population often has a very real sense of denial about their situation. Coping mechanisms include substance abuse and domestic violence.
3. Generational: This population has been in poverty for generations, and has been taught how to navigate the system and access resources. The growing challenge has become the enormous amount of competition (from situational poverty) for these resources.

Information & Referral: Five partners in the Collaborative provide information & referral services. These neighborhood centers are able to provide advocacy on-site as families and individuals engage in wraparound services that will move them toward financial stability.
Education: We will identify other community partners with expertise in various fields to help create and convene financial education opportunities in neighborhoods across Toledo.
“Customers” will choose or be referred to these learning opportunities according to their financial needs. Collectively, these learning opportunities will be referred to as the Learning Academy. Three partners are currently engaged in this work.

This move officially recognizes something we have known all along, that our efforts in every other area of our mission – workforce development, health, civil rights and civic engagement – mean nothing if our youngest citizens are growing up without the basic skills to function effectively in society.

Second, the Urban League has undertaken a targeted effort to advocate for issues that are critical to the social and economic well-being of every person in Northwest Ohio. This means that we’ll work proactively with other organizations to address specific concerns in the community and apply what we’ve learned from direct experience about the issues.

It’s true, the promise of these initiatives has invigorated our work and created excitement among staff and supporters. For the last 14 years, the Urban League has worked to improve the social and economic conditions of disadvantaged and underserved people in Northwest Ohio and, thanks to the new focus, the future looks bright.

Our Mission

Our History

In October of 1994, a local group of concerned citizens began a movement to establish an Urban League Affiliate in the Toledo area. This effort resulted in the organization, planning and development of the Toledo Urban League Sponsoring Committee which included a working subcommittee for satisfying applicant status requirements as directed by the National Urban League.

In August of 1996, the Greater Toledo Urban League, Inc. was officially established as a National Urban League Affiliate.
